Environs Kimberley (EK) is an independent community environment group dedicated to caring for the nature and culture of the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The group was formed in 1996 in opposition to a proposal to dam the Fitzroy River and establish a massive genetically engineered cotton industry in the west Kimberley.

EK believes that the Kimberley’s major asset is its magnificent natural environment, which must be protected. The group supports development that is locally based and compatible with the special qualities and values of this unique, beautiful and largely unspoiled region. We are strong advocates of community engagement in government planning for the region and support initiatives that protect the region’s biodiversity and abundance. Environs Kimberley upholds Aboriginal people’s custodianship of their traditional country and their right to participate in and benefit from all decisions made about the region.

EK wants to protect the Kimberley from over—development – from broad scale land clearing, dams on wild rivers, unsustainable agricultural practices, chemical pollution, over—fishing, over—exploitation by mining companies and insensitive use by tourists and the public.
